When we close our eyes, feel the warm rays of sunshine and a light breeze on our skin it feels just like a normal summer… until we get reminded to wear our masks.

The new normal is here and we are slowly adapting to it. So must our skin, which is mostly affected by us wearing masks. I met the founder of the skincare market’s currently hottest brand, named after himself, Prof. Dr. Augustinus Bader, to speak about his tips on skin health, masks and sunscreen to get through this pandemic summer with a healthy and beautiful skin:

  1. Although our creams do not contain SPF protection (as it would interfere with our technology), it is essential to protect the epidermis from the solar radiation that erodes the skin’s surface stability. When choosing a sunscreen, I’d always advise using physical sunscreen as opposed to chemical sunscreen. Physical sunscreens contain active mineral ingredients, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which work by sitting on top of the skin to deflect and scatter damaging UV rays away from the skin without clogging pores or irritating skin. In contrast, chemical sunscreens contain carbon-based compounds, such as oxybenzone and octinoxate, which create a chemical reaction and work by converting UV rays into heat and releasing that heat from the skin. Chemical sunscreens can potentially increase in existing brown spots and discoloration due to higher internal skin temperature (overheated skin can make brown spots worse, such as melasma). There is also an increased chance of redness for rosacea-prone skin types and pore congestion for acne-prone skin types.
  2. With any sunscreen, it’s necessary to use an antioxidant cream underneath. It helps prevent oxidative stress that can accelerate aging while increasing the effectiveness of sunscreen. Our skincare technology works to protect the skin from UV and free radical damage and prevent and reduce the appearance of discolouration.
  3. The constant wearing of masks and overexposure to the sun can exacerbate skin sensitivity and lead to inflammation. To combat this, I recommend refraining from using any harsh ingredients such as parabens, SLS, mineral oils, fillers, and silicones. Instead, select products that are fragrance-free, and contain natural components such as Aloe Vera extract to calm inflammation.
  4. Do not use extremely hot or cold water and avoid soaking your skin in water for an extended period of time; it will break down your skin.
  5. Avoid using abrasive scrubs or stiff-bristled cleansing brushes on the face as it can cause micro-tears in the skin’s surface.

Now, in order to support his Foundation’s mission to bring this healing treatment to those who need it most, he has developed an innovative skincare technology.
