Cap Rocat Mallorca is a place where history resonates. As a former military fort, it takes full advantage of its elevated position in a secluded yet strategic location on a rocky headland right on the Bay of Palma de Mallorca. Merging effortlessly into the landscape, the essential essence of the military architecture adds an extra dimension to the overall hotel experience. In fact, in certain secluded corners and especially at twilight, you can really imagine a sentry on duty. Nowadays, shouted military orders are replaced with total calm while the controlled “pop” of the finest cava or champagne has taken over from the cannon fire of the past.

The desire to fit comfortably with the natural environment has guided the sensitive transformation into a standout hotel and there has been no compromise at all on getting all every essential detail “just right”. Leading architect Antonio Obrador has applied so much of his innovative flair to the shape, structure and feel which you experience at Cap Rocat.

From the subterranean spa hewn from the limestone from which the hotel rises to the individual details in each suite, everything blends together in a harmonic way.

Being immediately adjacent to the sea has gifted the suites with views which sparkle whatever the time of day. For those seeking complete privacy, The Sentinels offers three suites crafted out of former surveillance posts cut into the rock. The El Cabo suite makes the most of its extra seclusion and also provides its own terraces and pool.

At Cap Rocat Mallorca there is a deep understanding of the need for tourism to be sustainable. This is not a gesture towards doing things in the right way but rather a deeply-held set of values which extends through all aspects of the hotel’s operations from eliminating waste to cutting the carbon footprint. A key element of the approach is to show respect for the preservation of the marine environment so that future generations will be able to enjoy the pristine conditions which surround the hotel. This is especially important given that Cap Rocat is situated in a guarded natural reserve whose ethos is all about protecting the sea and its creatures. It is not just about how the sea looks from the private terraces but instead involves asking what is happening on the seabed below and in the water itself.

The hotel makes meaningful efforts to be a long-term customer of local eco-friendly farmers and fishermen. As well as supporting local businesses throughout the island, this cuts down food journey times and distances so the produce served is always as fresh as it could be. The Mediterranean cuisine is not just of the highest quality but the supply chain from the field, orchard or fishing net is kept sustainable throughout.

It is hard, however, to see beyond the sheer beauty of the location and the way in which it seems to capture all of the atmosphere and light of the sea and the sun. The Mallorcan sunshine stirs warmth in the stones of a fort and this resonates softly by night. The fusion of sea and sky at the infinity pool plays with the senses and generates a deep feeling of relaxation.

The build-up to sunset is a time of heightened expectations as the intensity of the colors increases and the character of the Med starts to change as darkness falls. A building from the 19th Century has both light and life and it is plain to see that Cap Rocat has found a new role which will bring peace and pleasure for the years ahead.
