Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol, Anish Kapoor, Olafur Eliasson. These are only few of the artists, who created unique artworks for the label of Château Mouton Rothschild, in the past decades. Château Mouton Rothschild is undoubtedly one of the best red wines in the world, yet these art collaborations make the experience of enjoying and collecting those wines, extra special. Facts, that are already known to the world. But there is something, that is not public.
I would really call it the “holy grail of art in wine”. A special exhibition on the grounds of Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux, which showcases all original artworks (and some behind the scenes details) ever created for the house’s labels. The names, works, and history you discover there have a quality, to which only the best museums in the world can live up to. An exhibition, that is only visitable in person, by invitation or appointment, and that has a strict non-photo policy.
When you enter these holy halls on a path from wine to art, you just think: “Wow, I had no idea something like this even exists.”
Joan Miró, for example, created a painting for the Château Mouton Label 1969: Dominated by a vast, blood-red grape, his work includes a discreet but witty obeisance to the family: the blue and yellow of the famous Rothschild horse racing colors.
For the 1973 label, the year of Picasso’s death, Château Mouton paid tribute to the late artist and took one of his watercolor paintings from 1959. Picasso’s wife was invited to select a fitting art work to adorn their wine bottle.
1973 was also the year, when Château Mouton has achieved the status “Premier Cru”. A significant milestone in the wine’s history.
In 1975 Andy Warhol worked, as always inspired by photographs, on a painting, that was juxtaposing different studies of Baron Pilippe de Rothschild.
The 2009 label by the sculptor, painter and visual contemporary artist Anish Kapoor expresses the fertile thrust of plant life, the result of an intense encounter between matter and light. At once austere and flamboyant.
The 2019 label has been illustrated by the Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, showing the Solar Iris of Mouton by Olafur Eliasson, celebrating the alliance of sun and wine.
“Solar Iris of Mouton is a map of all the sunsets and sunrises that take place over a year at Château Mouton Rothschild,” the artist said. The work is divided into two horizontal strips, the upper part representing daytime with its golden hues, the lower part the night in midnight blue.” The unveiling celebration took place at Château de Versailles in 2021.
From last year’s label theme: the sun, Château Mouton moves to this year’s theme: the moon.
On the occasion of the reveal of the label for Château Mouton Rothschild 2020, illustrated by the British artist of Scottish origin Peter Doig, Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA, in partnership with Sotheby’s, organized an exceptional online auction which raised EUR 175,000 The proceeds, minus expenses, will be donated to the firefighters of the Bordeaux region (SDIS 33) to provide them with additional fire prevention equipment.
“In 2022, which promises to be a great vintage, parts of our region were ravaged by major wildfires. That is why, as we reveal the artist and the artwork created to illustrate the label of Château Mouton Rothschild 2020, we decided, in partnership with Sotheby’s, to organize the sale by auction of an exceptional lot, the entire proceeds from which will be donated to the firefighters of the Gironde department. In doing so, we wish to add our voice to the universal expressions of gratitude and admiration they so richly deserve and support their work in a practical way, especially in terms of prevention.” the Rothschild family says.
