Kicked off during Zurich Art Weekend and on view until September 30th, Warhol / Cutrone, curated by James Hedges, revisits one of New York’s most iconic artistic collaborations through a curated selection of paintings, drawings, and rare photographs—many shown publicly for the first time.
The exhibition is hosted at one of my favorite galleries in Zurich, Galerie Gmurzynska, where the striking architectural interior by Zaha Hadid creates a bold spatial dialogue with the raw, expressive works of Warhol and Cutrone.
Ronnie Cutrone, known for his vivid, cartoon-saturated imagery, was more than Andy Warhol’s assistant—he was a collaborator and key figure behind some of Warhol’s most recognisable series. From Ladies and Gentlemen to Oxidation, Skulls, and Dollar Signs, Cutrone played a central role in the development and execution of these works during a decade that defined Warhol’s late career.
Galerie Gmurzynska’s exhibition offers a rare look behind the surface. Warhol’s section includes a selection of unique Polaroids—featuring Grace Jones, Keith Haring, Lou Reed, Candy Darling and Joseph Beuys—that offer quiet, often intimate glimpses into his world. Cutrone’s three-dimensional photographs of the Factory, shown for the first time, bring viewers closer to the atmosphere of the studio and its inner circle.
After leaving the Factory in 1983, Cutrone developed his own distinct voice as an artist, reinterpreting American pop culture through bold paintings and drawings that challenged the line between high and low. His work sparked conversations and earned him solo exhibitions at major institutions like the Whitney and MoMA.
“New York was elegant and sleazy. Now it’s a shopping mall for dot-commers. We need our crime rate back. I want my muggers and hookers back,” Cutrone once said—a nostalgic, if provocative, nod to a city in transformation.
Warhol / Cutrone is a thoughtful reflection on creative collaboration, cultural symbols, and a moment in time when art, nightlife, and identity blurred into one.
