In the rapidly evolving field of biomedicine, stem cell therapy emerges as a beacon of hope and innovation. This therapy, currently centered more around prevention and personal future investment than immediate treatment, harnesses the remarkable potential of stem cells – undifferentiated cells with the ability to renew themselves and develop into various cell types.
I’ve met with one of Switzerlands leading experts in aesthetic medicine, Dr. Colette Camenisch, owner and leading plastic surgeon of Beethoven Clinic Zurich, to speak about this buzzing therapy, which is here to stay.
“The process and applications of stem cell therapy, particularly in aesthetics, open new horizons in both medical and cosmetic fields.” Dr. Colette Camenisch
The extraction of stem cells predominantly utilizes the STROMAL VASCULAR FRACTION (SVF) from subcutaneous adipose tissue. In a minor surgical procedure, stem cells are obtained from this fraction. Remarkably, about 10 million cells can be extracted from just 150ml of fat/SVF. These cells are then preserved through cryopreservation, a technique involving freezing, making them available for future medical needs.
Adult stem cells, the primary focus of this therapy, are a marvel of nature. They are capable of self-renewal and possess an enormous developmental potential. These properties make them one of the most promising subjects in biomedicine research. The ultimate goal is to harness these cells for regenerating one’s own tissues.
In the realm of aesthetic therapy, stem cell applications are multifaceted. Currently, treatments are limited to the face, neck, and décolleté due to legal constraints, but the potential extends much further. The use of SVF in skin rejuvenation is based on its ability to:
These properties collectively improve the skin’s local condition, leading to a fresher, rosier, and tighter appearance within about 30 days. Such results are unparalleled by any other current method or injection.
Stem cell therapy holds promise for scar correction, although routine application is impractical due to its complexity and cost. Research continues in fields like joint and cardiac muscle regeneration, with the overarching aim of regenerative medicine being to activate the body’s self-healing powers.
For aesthetic treatments, the effects last several years, with repeat treatments advised after 9 and 18 months, says Dr. Camenisch. The longevity of the treatment’s effects depends on the regenerative capability of one’s own skin tissue. The costs, however, vary based on individual needs and the complexity of the treatment, with stem cell storage options available for 10 to 30 years.
All in all, stem cell therapy and their ability to regenerate tissue, combat aging, and potentially heal various ailments offers a glimpse into a future where medicine and natural healing converge. As research progresses and legal boundaries expand, the full potential of stem cell therapy awaits to be unlocked, promising a new era of health and beauty.
